Vision APIs with a free tier — no credit card required.

Only four of the 10 leading image-tagging APIs let a developer make real API calls without entering a payment method. The three hyperscaler clouds all require a credit card even for their free quota. The three frontier multimodal LLMs all require pre-payment to access the API (Claude.ai and ChatGPT chat are free; the APIs are not). The smaller, focused providers — Clarifai, Imagga, Cloudinary, plus Google Gemini's AI Studio tier — are the only paths into a no-card prototype.

Why this matters

The presence or absence of a no-card free tier is the single biggest predictor of how fast a developer can build a working prototype with a given API. Teams routinely choose the no-card provider for the proof-of-concept and then re-architect later — which means the no-card providers capture disproportionate early-stage mind-share even when the eventual production stack moves elsewhere.

What counts

  • Yes — a documented free quota exists and can be enabled without entering payment information.
  • Partial — free quota exists but a credit card is required to activate the account.
  • No — no self-serve free quota for the API; payment or sales contact required.
